Tombs around Hue

Visiting the tombs around Hue

Just outside of Hue lies the tombs of the former Nguyen emperors of the dynasties which used to rule Vietnam. There are several tombs which you can visit such as the Tomb of Gia Long, Tomb of Minh Mang, Tomb of Thieu Tri, Tomb of Tu Duc, Tomb of Dong Khanh and the tomb of Khai Dinh. Several tour agencies in Hue offer day trips to the tombs, but it is worthwhile to check which ones they visit as this can vary and you could miss the one you might want to see. Alternatively, it is possible to rent a motorcycle with a driver for the day and visit the tombs on your own.

The majority of the tombs are no more than 12 km away (8 miles) from Hue. All the tombs charge an entrance fee. The tombs are build in different styles as each one was built for a different emperor. There are some common features as each of them has a little square with stone statue representing guards to protect the tombs. The Tomb of Tu Duc consists of different buildings and represents almost an imperial village. There is a small lake with an wooden building. There is a large mausoleum which is dedicated to Tu Duc. It is worth exploring the buildings in the area a bit further away from the main buildings as they are original and less visited. The Tomb of Minh Mang has the layout of an park with lakes. The main buildings are laid out in a long straight with in between attractive gardens and ponds. The Tomb of Khai Dinh has been influenced by European styles and more details has been given to all the buildings and some amazing stone carving work can be found here. It is also built on the slope of a hill which never gives you the view of the whole tomb, but you get surprised everything you go up the steps to the next level and to the final mausoleum on top of the hill. Some of the tours also include a visit to the Thien Mu pagoda.
