Exploring the scenery of Tam Coc

Tam Coc is located near the city of Ninh Binh and offers a spectacular boat ride on the Ngo Dong River. The scenery around Tam Coc is often referred to as Ha Long bay in land and is something it lives up to. It is possible to visit it by yourself, but many people visit it as a day trip from Hanoi as it is a more convenient way of getting around.

The tour usually includes a stop in the historical town Hoa Lu. The only place that is visited in Hoa Lu is the Dinh Le temple. The Dinh Le temple is small but attractive and has typical Vietnamese influences and is surrounded by nice scenery. From there on most operators offer the possibility to go on a bicycle and ride to the departing point at the river near Tam Coc.

The boat ride on the Ngo Dong river takes about three hours in which you depart in one direction for about 1.5 hours and then reverse the same route. On the way back the sun starts to go down which completely changes the colors and appearance of the surroundings. The boat man don't row with their hands but with their feet, which is a remarkable thing to see. The ride shows you the amazing scenery of Vietnam with views on the karst mountains and if you are in the right time of the year the rice fields. It is remarkable to see how the scenery changes as with each bend of the river there are surprising new views. The boat ride also takes you through some caves in which the river flows through. A visit to Tam Coc is a popular day trip, so don't expect to be alone on the river and many tourists arrive at the same time. When you arrive at the halfway point to turn around there will be some persistent sellers trying to sell you drinks and snacks. If you want to get out of busy Hanoi and see some of the green countryside this trip is well recommended.

The day tour to Tam Coc is easily booked from Hanoi and most hotels and travel agents offer this day trip. If you want to visit Tam Coc from Ninh Binh, you can take the train from Hanoi to Ninh Binh and arrange local transportation. The best time to visit is from October to April as these are the driest months. To see the rice fields in their full glory the best month is March.
