Sightseeing in Hanoi

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and located in the North of the country. It is the second largest city in the country after Ho Chi Minh city (Saigon). The city is a mixture of old buildings and newer developments. The central spot in Hanoi is the Hoan Kiem lake where supposedly a giant turtle lives. On the lake is a temple called the Ngoc Son temple which can be accessed via the red Huc sunbeam bridge which adds a fair bit of character to the city. The other main sight of Hanoi is the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh where the body of the former Vietnamese leader is put to rest. The mausoleum can be visited, but check the opening hours first as access hours are limited. Many Vietnamese people still pay their respects to Ho Chi Minh. The mausoleum is part of a park which includes a small temple, a museum and also the former house of Ho Chi Minh.

There are several temples in Hanoi such as the temple of literature with its large gardens, the Ngoc Son temple and the Bach Ma temple. If you are into museums there is enough choice, but the Ho Chi Minh museum and the national museum of Vietnamese history are probably the first ones on your list. For those who are interested to see some background of the Vietnam war and especially hear the story from a different perspective, the Hanoi army museum is recommended. Something related to it is Hoa Lo prison which was nicknamed the Hanoi Hilton during the Vietnam war. This prison played a large role in history going back to French colonial times, but also during the Vietnam war, prisoners were kept here.

On the North side of Hoan Kiem lake there is a part which is referred to as the old town. It does not have many noticeable sights, but it is full of character as it gives a small peak into the history of this city. There are many shops which cater mainly to the locals and give a better inside into how the people here live. It is also a charming part of the city and a good place to go for a short walk.

Hanoi also acts as a center for the region and many people fly in or out of the country from this city. Many or the organized tours leave from Hanoi to the rice fields near the river in Tam Coc, the amazing landscapes of Ha Long Bay and a few other places. It is worth shopping around at different tour operators to get familiar with the available options and prices. If you want to visit Sapa and its surrounding rice fields, the night train leaves from here and it is just as easy to do it yourself instead of joining a tour.

The easiest way of getting into Hanoi is by plane. From the airport there is a minibus which drops you off near the city center. For those who are already in Vietnam, an alternative is the train that runs between the south and the north and is comfortable or the night bus which is not so nice but gets you there. The easiest way of getting around is just walking and most sights are located close to each other. There is basically no public transportation in the city itself, but you'll get offered a motor taxi every five minutes. Hanoi is not a quiet city and traffic is busy, but slow moving. Crossing the street is a special experience, as you will have to slowly walk between the scooters and motorcycles which never seem to stop. The strategy is to keep going at a slow but steady pace and all the traffic will drive around you. The best time to visit is in April and May as the temperatures a comfortable. The summers can be boiling hot and the winters chilly. The weather here varies to much from day to day and you'll need a bit of luck. What makes it more complicated is that Vietnam has several micro-climates and the difference between the North and the South can be large making it impossible to visit the whole country during a sunny month.
