Exploring Vietnam by joining the DMZ tour

The demilitarized zone is where North and South Vietnam used to be divided and saw some heavy fighting during the Vietnam war. The area has become a tourist attraction known as the demilitarized zone (DMZ), although many of the sights have changed significantly.

To visit the area, the most convenient way is taking a bus tour from Hue, which will drive you to all the different sights in one long day which starts early in the morning. The tour visits the Ben Hai river which used to be the natural border between the North and South of Vietnam. The DMZ tour stops at several places of interest, which the first one in is the 'Rockpile'. This is one of the largest hills in the surroundings and was used as a strategic lookout by the US army during the Vietnam war. It is obvious to see why the US choose this hill as a lookout as the view from the top must allow you to see for miles. Another stop includes a visit to the Ho Chi Minh trail, but there is not much to see as they are old trails which are now overgrown with vegetation. The next stop is the former US military base of Khe Sanh. There was severe fighting between both sides of the Vietnam war and what is left nowadays is a museum and some wreckage.

The last stop is for most people the important one which are the Vinh Moc tunnels. These tunnels were a secret underground network used by the Vietcong to transport supplies and people. The Vinh Moc tunnels contain several smart pieces of engineering to allow enough ventilation and hide the entrances. The DMZ tour can also include an additional stop at a traditional village where rural Vietnames people still live in small wooden houses. The DMZ tour has the disadvantage that you spent a large amount of time in the bus and you do not get to see the war scenery and relics you expect. On the other hand, the DMZ tour allows you to see additional views of the scenery of Vietnam, away from the main roads and not just the main tourist sights.
