Sightseeing in San Francisco

San Francisco is regarded as one of the most liberal cities in the USA and located in sunny California. It is also one of the most attractive as it has a mix of European and typical American styled buildings. The 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed a fair amount of its historical buildings, but parts have been restored and the city has maintained its charms. Unfortunately earthquakes are common here as in 1989 there was another big one.

The European influences are best seen in the area around city hall which has a French feel to it. It has its typical architecture and there is a fair amount of green space. Another place is the Civic center which is located in the heart of the city. The final place to experience a European look is the Golden Gate park where several statues and other structures definitely have been inspired by a foreign influence.

San Francisco has mixed its historical look with modern high rise buildings with the most recognizable being the TransAmerica Pyramid. This is the highest structure of the city and can be seen from many places and takes a dominant part in the skyline. Some of the other modern buildings include several steel and glass skyscrapers of which several can be found in the down town area. San Francisca has taken great care to retain an attractive center and none of the buildings, although built in different era's are misplaced.

Besides its buildings on land, San Francisco is famous for its bridges. The best known one is the Golden Gate bridge which is truly more impressive than most of the bridges in the world. Unfortunately the views to the Golden Gate bridge can be limited as fog comes in regularly and thereby blocks the view. The golden gate is located away from downtown but there is a bus that can take you there. Another bridge which is recognizable is the Bay suspension bridge. This one is longer and located near the waterfront down town and is equally impressive looking.

San Francisco is also home to some unique attractions such as Alcatraz and Lombard street. The famous prison Alcatraz is where Al Capone spent some time for dodging taxes. The prison is still open to visitors today. The city has been built on several hills so expect to walk up and down a few, but this creates some unique photo opportunities. The best example of this is the famous Lombard street with its well known zig-zag shape. A final place to mention is the area around Coit tower. If you want to get a overview of the city, head over here as from here it is possible to can see the Golden gate bridge, Lombard street and also some of the downtown area.

There are several options for day trips. The nearby Napa valley is the wine growing region of California and a great place to drive through and enjoy the vine yards. For a beach destination, consider Santa Cruz which is home to a pier and lots of easy entertainment, but offers some great surfing. One of the best day trips is Yosemite national park which is the most visited in the region, but this is a long drive and one might consider an overnight stay.

Getting to San Francisco can be by plane as it has its own airport. There are limited train connections, but several buses such as those from Greyhound connect many of the nearby cities. Due to its climate, San Francisco can be visited the whole year round, although there can be large temperature differences between daytime and in the evening. Many locals will carry a jacket with them even when its warm because they might need it later on.
