Things to see in New York city

To many people New York city is known as the 'Big Apple' and has been the background for many movies and TV series. New York probably one of the most recognizable skyline of America or maybe even in the world. When visiting this place for the first time, it might actually feel much more recognizable because all the buildings and street scenes are familiar. Although New York cities consists of several boroughs, the far majority of sights are located in Manhattan.

Besides being an enormous city with all its good and bad things, New York city is also home to the to some of the earliest skyscrapers dating back to the thirties. These are scattered all around Manhattan, but most of them can be found in Midtown and around Wall street. Although several cities have more skyscrapers than NY these days, the iconic buildings such as the Empire state building, the Chrysler building and other early skyscrapers make this place much more unique. There is also a proper Chinatown and Little Italy and the world-famous buildings with the steel-stairs which in the movies are used as a favorite getaway for every action hero or bad guy.

Downtown Manhattan is the location for City Hall and the famous Wall Street, one of the most important financial districts in the world. For a taste of culture NY is home to many museums with the Guggenheim being the most famous. To get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, you can relax in central park which is a relaxing green zone surrounded by skyscrapers.

There aren't that many opportunities to get out of the city for a day. Boston and Philadelphia are only a few hours away by bus or car, but it does more justice to them to spend more than one day there. One opportunity that always exist is renting a car and driving to upstate New York to see some of its nature.

There are two airports which provide access by air which are LaGuardia and J.F. Kennedy airport. Given the importance of this city, it is well connected to most places in the world. For those who are in the US there are several bus companies, especially along the east coast that connect the major cities. Getting around New is best done on foot and by the subway. The subway works very well and most stations are only around 8 blocks apart from each other. The best thing is to get off at one area and then explore it on foot as many sights are located close together. Multiple day passes are available. New York is located in the Northern part of the country and as a result the weather is seasonal. The winter months from November up to March are probably not the best, but the rest of the year is enjoyable. It depends on what you want to do when is a good time. There are several activities such as shopping and museums that can be done on a rainy day.
