Hiking up Snowdon

The highest mountain in Wales is called Snowdon and lies in the national park of Snowdonia. Snowdon is interesting for more than just being a mountain as the whole surrounding scenery is just stunning and is one of the highlights of Wales. The area was formed during the ice-age in a process call glaciation. Snowdon being the highest mountain in Wales is also included in the three peak challenge in which the highest peak of Scotland, Wales and England have to be climbed within 24 hours.

There are different routes up the mountain with the Llanberis path, the Pyg track and the miners track the most popular. For the more adventurous people you can try the Crib Goch route, but this is a challenging route as it is a scramble over a long ridge. One of the most beautiful paths for going up is the Watkins path which is also surprisingly quiet while other paths can be busy. All the different trails are very different in terms of scenery and it is difficult to indicate which one is most beautiful or recommended best. From the top you get an amazing view down on its surroundings including the lakes and the horse shoe. It is possible to go up one route and come down another to enjoy more of the scenery.

Given the popularity of climbing Snowdon, it is unlikely that you will be alone or get lost, especially on a national bank holiday and that is why it is sometimes referred to as the busiest mountain in the UK. It is also possible to go up the mountain with the Snowdon mountain railway which departs from Llanberis train station. There is a bus service which goes around Snowdonia, but check the times as they run a very irregular schedule.
