Sightseeing in Edinburgh

The city of Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and has a population of around half a million. The city is well famous for its historical city center with is medieval old town and many Georgian buildings. If you want to see one of the nicest cities of Europe than Edinburgh is highly recommended.

The city center is a historical piece of art and walking around is definitely the best way to experience the city of Edinburgh. The highlight of this is the royal mile which has kept the same look as it did many years ago except for the few tourist shops. At the end of it lies the castle which is one of the best preserved in the country and halfway the impressive St. Giles' cathedral.

Another place where to see some of Edinburgh's best architecture is around George street. It does not have famous landmarks, but gives a nice impression of historical Edinburgh. The area around the royal mile is called the old town, but this area is referred to as the new town and exemplifies a later architectural style.

In between the old and new town lies Princess street gardens. This is a relaxing place and offers views of the walls of the castle. Here is the Scott monument located which has been built as a memory to the writer Sir Walter Scott. On a sunny day this is the place where many people come to enjoy the sunshine.

For a nice view over the city it is worth climbing up Calton Hill. On this hill, several monuments such as the National monument, Nelson's monument and the Dugald Stewart monument are located. From Calton hill you get the classical view down on Princes street. Another place to get the bird's eye view over Edinburgh is Arthur's seat. It is a bit of a walk to get up, but the views over Edinburgh are amazing and offers a good opportunity to see the medieval skyline.

Besides the city itself being an attraction, the Edinburgh festival is held every year for four weeks in August. This consists of the Edinburgh Fringe, the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Edinburgh International book festival. It is well worth a visit, so check the planned events ahead when visiting in August.

There are several options to get out of Edinburgh such as the castle in Stirling, the beautiful town St. Andrews which is home to the famous golf courts and the smaller city Dundee. All of these can be reached by bus or train and can be easily visited on a day trip. Almost all the hotels and souvenir shops offer day trips throughout Scotland which include some of the lakes and the highlands. When taking a tour that drives far up to the north do realize that you will spent a lot of time in the bus.

Compared to other major cities in Europe, Edinburgh is not the best connected one, but there are several budget flight available. Alternatively fly into Glasgow which is only a few hours away. To get around the city, the main form of transportation is by bus as there is no metro. There are city tour buses where you can get on and off for a day at several places. These are ideal for visiting the sights outside the city center. Unfortunately because Edinburgh is located in Scotland, the weather is not always the best and especially in the winter months it is worth bringing an umbrella.
