Sightseeing in Belfast

The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast. This city has been troubled throughout many years, but seem to have found itself once again. Belfast has a small historical center with landmark buildings such as the the Edwardian styled city hall, Saint Anne's Cathedral, Albert clock, Victoria Square, the modern Waterfront Hall. It has been kept in a good state and is a nice place to go sightseeing.

Outside the center lies Queens university of which its main building consists of a red brick college which has preserved its historical character. This university reflects some of the best architecture that Belfast has to offer. When going into the troubled areas such as on Shankill Road, you will find the murals that made Belfast famous. Originally they used to represent the national struggle, but many of them have been painted to reflect modern politics. Often it is still noticeable when you walk into a different area. The murals still reflect the problems that have been going on in Northern Ireland.

Seeing the murals of Belfast is best done with a Black taxi tour which takes you to the best of the wall murals and explains the history of the city. Besides its turbulent past, Belfast is also the city where the titanic was built and its history in ship-building is still visible today by two large cranes which have been named David and Goliath. Being located in Northern Ireland it basically means that it never gets really hot or cold, but it does receive a fair bit of rain so it might be worthwhile to swap the sun-cream for an umbrella.
