Sightseeing in Kiev

Kiev (or Kyiv) is the capital of Ukraine and a city with 2.8 million inhabitants. The city is one of the oldest in Europe and had a turbulent history and buildings built in different times can be seen. One of the main sights is the Kiev Pechersk Lavra which was built in 1051 and is one of the holiest place in Ukraine. Other historical sights include the National Opera house, St. Sophia's cathedral, St. Michaels monastery and the Mariyins'ky palace. A reminder of the old city walls is the reconstruction of the Golden gate of Kiev. For postwar architecture go the Museum of the Great Patriotic War where you will find the massive Mother Motherland statue on top of it. The most remarkable building in Kiev is probably the house with the Chimeras with is basically a house decorates with statues of chimera's. The house is used as a presidential residence. Getting around Kiev can be done with the metro to cover the larger distances. The city itself is pleasant to walk around and this is also a good opportunity to take in the different building styles of the city center Many signs are still in Ukrainian only, so some knowledge of the Cyrillic writing will come in handy. To visit it is best to go between May and September as cold weather and snow can be expected outside of these months.
