Sightseeing in Kiev

Kiev (or Kyiv) is the capital of Ukraine and a city with 2.8 million inhabitants. The city is one of the oldest in Europe and had a turbulent history and buildings built in different times ranging from its royal past to communist times and now a modern look can all be seen. The city has not been flooded with tourists yet, but this is undoubtedly a destination which will be more popular in the future.

One of the main sights is the Kiev Pechersk Lavra which was built in 1051 and is the holiest place in Ukraine. This is a truly beautiful place and looks even better than in the pictures below. Nearby is the the Museum of the Great Patriotic War located. The most impressive feature is the massive Mother Motherland statue which has been built on top of it.

Other historical sights which are a must see within the city center include the beautifully designed National Opera house and the Mariyins'ky palace. There are several churches of which some have been converted into museums, but other still have their original function. The most remarkable of these are the St. Sophia's cathedral and St. Michael's monastery. The bell towers of these can be climbed to get a nice view over the city below. A reminder of the medieval city walls is the reconstructed Golden gate of Kiev. Unfortunately the rest of the walls don't exist anymore.

The most remarkable building in Kiev is probably the house with the Chimeras with is basically a house that has been decorated with statues of chimera's. The house is used as a presidential residence and stands out compared to all the other buildings in the city. Nearby are some government buildings which all have an impressive appearance.

The ultimate day trip from Kiev is a visit to the Chernobyl nuclear plant. There was a large accident here and a sarcophagus has been built around the reactor. A tour usually includes a stop at the town Pripyat which has been evacuated due to the radiation and is now a deserted ghost town. A more lighter trip would be to the the city Chernihiv which has a historical city center filled with old churches.

It is possible to fly into Kiev, but it is unlikely that budget airlines are available. An alternative is to take the train with the cities on the Eastern side being better connected than those in the west outside of Ukraine. There are also long distance buses, but some of the roads are in need of some maintenance. The city is too big to walk everywhere, but there is a metro available which depart frequently. Many signs are still in Ukrainian only, so some knowledge of the Cyrillic writing will come in handy, but with a bit of practice you will find you way. The best time to visit is between May and September as cold weather and a fair amount of snow can be expected outside of these months.
