Visiting the Phi Phi Islands
|
When Thailand became a major tourist destination, the Phi Phi islands were probably one of the first places to be discovered by backpackers. The Phi Phi Islands are located in the province Krabi near the Andaman coast and consists of a large island 'Phi Phi Don' and a smaller island 'Phi Phi Leh'. The Phi Phi islands are getting very developed now, especially after the movie 'The Beach' was filmed here which takes some of its tropical island atmosphere away.
When arriving on Koh Phi Phi you can still see why this place attracts so many people. It has several really nice white beaches and crystal clear blue water. All the accommodation is located on the larger island and it well developed with many hotels and resorts. After the 2004 tsunami many of the hotels have been rebuilt. There are a decent amount of bars for a bit of nightlife. The smaller Phi Phi island can only be reached by boat as staying on the island is not allowed. Visiting the smaller island Phi Phi Leh should not be missed as it is a real gem and there are plenty of long tail boats to get you there. Upon arrival of Phi Phi Leh's Maya Bay it is not hard to image why this is one of the best beaches in the world.
Another island which is nearby located is Bamboo island. It does not have the magic of the Phi Phi islands but is worth the stop if you are island hopping amount the Andaman sea. Because of the clear blue water the islands are a great place to go snorkeling or diving and swim with the turtles and tropical fish. Getting to the Phi Phi islands is easy as you can get there straight from Krabi airport via Ao Nang by bus and boat. Visiting is best done outside the rainy season as there is a risk that the sea is too rough to get you there. |
