Sightseeing in Chiang Mai

In the north of Thailand lies the city of Chang Mai. It feels more like a town than a large city and is surrounded by country side and lush mountains. Chiang Mai is well famous for its temples and there are many of them dotted around town. Some of them are from the day the city was founded and were built in Burmese, Sri Lankan and Thai architectural styles. This is largely visible in details of the decorations which have been applied extensively.

If you have been to the nearby historical city of Sukothai than it is likely you will recognize the layout of the smaller temples. The main difference is that in Chiang Mai the temples are intact and still fulfill their religious role, whereas in Sukothai only the remaining brick work is left changing the temple into something unrecognizable. One of the largest temples in Chiang Mai is Wat Judee Luang which contains a large ruin of its massive pagoda. Other smaller, but not less interesting temples are Wat Phra Singh, Wat Papao and Wat Buppharam. Some of the other sights in Chiang Mai are its old city wall which is made out of brick and the city hall with in front the statue of the tree kings.

Chiang Mai is also a good place to go on a trek in the surrounding hills. These treks usually last for 2 or 3 days and can include elephant riding and bamboo rafting. For exploring the hills around Chiang Mai, you can also rent a scooter and drive around yourself. If you want to travel onward to Laos, bus tickets can be easily arranged here.
