Sightseeing in Bangkok

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and apparently the hottest capital of the world. That is regarding to the warm weather and when visiting Bangkok at its hottest in April this city can be exhausting. Bangkok is a massive city with over 11 million inhabitants. The main sights and hotels are located around the notoriously famous Khao San road which has become the ultimate tourist hangout. This road is a collection of restaurants, bars and street vendors and provides much of the entertainment for the evening. As an alternative to the restaurants, it is worth trying some of the street food as its taste is delicious and low priced. Khao San road has become too small to host all the visitors and as a result the streets close to it have taken on the same role. These might actually have become nicer alternatives as they are still busy, but not crowded.

The main tourist attraction in Bangkok is the royal palace which is an impressive complex of buildings and temples. It's amazing to see how much detail and color every structure has which makes it a true home for a king. To enter the royal palace you will have to wear long trousers and a decent t-shirt. Given the average temperature in Bangkok, it is best to visit it in the morning. Close to the palace is the foreign ministry located which has an impressive facade. The other palace is the Samakhom throne hall which looks much different and is much smaller as it doesn't have a courtyard, but is equally impressive.

There are many smaller temples dotted around the city. The larger ones are Wat Arun which is an impressive old temple located near the river and Wat Pho which is located close to the royal palace. Wat Pho is also known as the temple of the reclining Buddha because of its statue of 160 ft long. Other temples include Wat Suthat, Loha Prasat and the marble temple. If you have little time visit the temples close to the democracy monument. As there are a few clustered together you get a good impression of different styles of Thai temples. There is little point in trying to see all of them as at some point you are likely to loose interest so it is worth doing some research and pick the best ones. For a view over Bangkok, climb to the temple on top of the Golden Mount.

Bangkok is also a shoppers paradise. The best known shopping center is MBK which has everything on offer you want to buy. It is made up mostly of small shops which sell an enormous variety of one thing. Bargaining is expected, but this is done in a friendly way. Alternative shopping centers are Emporium, Siam discovery and Central World Plaza. For those with little time, there are several street stalls located on and near Khao San road which sell the most common items that tourists want to bring home with them. If you bargain well, you can get them at the same price as in the larger shopping centers.

There are many days trips possible to get out of Bangkok with the most popular one being the historical city of Ayuthaya. It might be worth to spent two days in this city as there are too many things to see and spending only a couple of hours here doesn't do it justice. Alternatively, for a single day you can visit the ancient city Muang Boran which lies a few kilometers outside of Bangkok and gives an overview of the history of Thailand, the palace of Bang Pa-In or Kanchanaburi where the bridge over the river Kwai can be found.

The best of getting to Bangkok is by plane. It has the main airport for international flights, but even for those who come from the island flying is a good option as there are several budget options. There are buses to get around Bangkok, but it is not the most convenient for tourist. Most places are only a short ride away the rickshaw or tuk-tuk is recommended or just take a taxi. Alternatively there are water taxi's which offer a different experience. This city can be visited all year round, although from May to November there is the rainy season which see some heavy showers. Still, these usually last no more than a few hours and when they are gone, the good weather returns.
