Exploring in and around Ao Nang
|
Ao Nang, although being very touristy, is on its own not the most interesting in Thailand. It is located in Krabi on the mainland along the Andaman coast. The coast is lined with resorts all along the beach of Ao Nang. The beach is unfortunately just average. You might wonder why this place is so popular but this is because Ao Nang is an ideal point for starting your trips to the Phi Phi islands, Hong island and Raileh. The beaches of Raileh are in easy reach as it is only a short boat ride away and water taxi's depart every half hour or so. A trip to Hong island needs to be booked with an tour operator as staying on Hong island itself is not allowed. It takes a fair bit of time on sea to get there, but the boat ride is nice and Hong island is amazing. For a trip to the Phi Phi islands it is possible to go on a day tour and visit the main beaches or just take the ferry and then spent some day on the Phi Phi islands.
Ao Nang also works as a base if you want to do some diving and these tours are available at the many tour operators. The main advantage of Ao Nang is that it is a bit more cheaper than the surrounding islands or beach resorts, even when you factor in extra costs for transportation. Getting to Ao Nang is easy as there is a bus directly from Krabi airport and the day tours can be booked everywhere. Ao Nang also allows for some relaxation as there are many open-air massage places, a beach, plenty of restaurants and some bars for a bit of nightlife. |
