Sightseeing in Zaragoza

Between the cities of Barcelona and Madrid lies the city of Zaragoza. Although it is not the most famous of all cities in Spain, it is a nice place to stop and spent the day here to do some sightseeing. The city center has several attractive sights with the most significant being the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pilar near the the Elbo river. This church stands out from the city because of its size, its unique building style and its location along the Elbo river on one side and on a large square on the front side.

Like many Spanish cities there is also a bull ring which is made of red brick and nicely decorated. Other sights of Zaragoza include the cathedral of San Salvador, the Roman triumphal arch, the church of St. Gilles and the Parish church of St. James the great. The city used to be part of the kingdom of Aragon with the Aljaferia palace as a clear reminder of this medieval period. Zaragoza is pleasant to walk around and the city looks like typical Spanish city. The traffic, especially around the old town center is limited which enhances its charm. The number of tourists here is low which when visiting this city makes it more an authentic Spanish experience.

Because of its small size, you can see most of it in one day. If you are visiting Barcelona and Madrid, Zaragoza makes a nice stop in between to spent a day and experience some of the laid back Spanish culture without being swamped by tourists.
