Sightseeing in Toledo
|
Centrally located in Spain, just a short train ride outside of Madrid lies the city of Toledo of which its city center is an UNESCO world heritage site. One of the first sights you will probably see on arrival is the train station which is an architectural gem.
The city has many narrow cobbled streets, but getting around is easy, although you might need to look on your map a few times. You won't get lost as there are quite a few tourists around, so just follow the flow of people. The city is built on a hill which takes a bit more effort walking around, but it does increase its appeal. The main sights of Toledo include the Castillo the San Servando and the Alcazar fortress. Because it is built on top of an hill, the Alcazar has become the face of Toledo and can be seen from almost everywhere in the city. Other sights include the St. Martins bridge, the city hall, the Jesuit church, the Roman theater and the military infantry school. Metal working has been part of Toledo's economical base and the manufacturing of blades, swords and knifes has been important. As a results, many of the tourist shops now sell a large collection of enormous swords.
If you are tired of sightseeing, for a more cultural experience you can visit the Toledo museum of Art. It is easy to see the city in just one day and if you are staying in Madrid, it would make the perfect day trip. |
