Sightseeing in Salamanca

Salamanca is a student town in the middle of Spain. It is host to the university of Salamanca which is the oldest in Spain. Salamanca has a large historical city center with hardly any modern developments giving it a feeling of an authentic Spanish city. The main square, La Plaza Mayor, is typical for many Spanish cities. It can be best described as a large square with impressive buildings, of which on is the city hall, surrounding it. It is probably one of the nicest in Spain in terms of architectural design.

Salamanca has two cathedrals, the old and new one. One of the cathedrals is built on a hill, overlooking the city and provides the city of Salamanca with is unique medieval skyline. Salamanca does not have many landmark buildings, but the whole inner city is a masterpiece of historical architecture with buildings such as the convent of Agustinas, the church Iglesia de la Purisima, the Palacia de Anayo, the old Roman bridge and the convent of San Sebastian. Wherever you walk you will feel its authentic Spanish origins.

The city of Salamanca is easy to get to from Madrid as it is only a couple of hours away from Madrid. Probably to far away to visit as a day trip, but there is enough to see and do to justify one night staying there.
