Sightseeing in Madrid

Madrid, being the capital of Spain is a modern city and has an interesting historical city center. With a population of over 3 million people it is one of the largest cities of Europe and has been attracting tourists for many years. Being located right in the middle of the country it is an easy place to visit even when you want to combine it with a beach holiday or do some traveling around.

It has many interesting sights with the most noticeable one being the Royal Palace of Madrid. It was obvious built to impress in which it has succeeded and on the back it has some nice gardens where you can escape the crowds and go for a walk. Right next to it the modern but very large Almudena Cathedral is located which always does well in the pictures. Although it might look old, construction on it was only finished in 1993.

Madrid itself has many grotesque buildings built by wealthy people which are best exemplified on the Gran Via. A walk around this area gives you the best impression of the city. From here you are able to walk to the Cibeles palace which was built as a palace of communication and just looks awesome. Another sight which is not to be missed is the main square Plaza Mayor which is surrounded by old buildings in a typical Spanish architectural style and can be regarded as the heart of the city.

To see some of the city's history and art, visit the Museo del Prado which is highly regarded throughout as a world class museum and hosts several master pieces. To relax head over to Parque del Retiro which is a nice green space and has a nice lake and several monuments. On a sunny day in the weekend this park unfortunately gets very busy but it is still a good place to soak up the atmosphere and see what the locals do in their spare time.

Although Madrid has many things to see, there are a few day trips which are definitely worth it. The first one would be Toledo which is a very attractive town and home to the Alcazar fortress. Furthermore it flourished during late medieval times and still has retained some of that feeling. Alternatively there is Segovia which still has a Roman aqueduct and a massive church built in the center. Both can be reached easily by train.

Madrid is well connected by air to most other cities so that is the best way of getting in. For those who are already in Spain there are trains which are comfortable and there is a fast connection to Barcelona. Alternatively there are buses. Getting around the city is easy with the metro which takes you to all the places that you want to see although the city center is still compact enough to walk everywhere. For example, the royal palace and the central square are no more than 15 minutes apart from each other. Despite Spain having a reputation for being a sunny country, the winters in Madrid can get chilly with temperature dropping in the low single digits (Celsius) and even some snow can be seen. But anywhere from April to October is a good time to visit, but for those who don't like the heat July and August might be the months to avoid.
