Things to see in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter I of Russia and the city is a great example of architecture from that era. The historical city center is a masterpiece with many famous buildings such as the Peter and Paul fortress, the Palace square, the Admiralty  the Kazan Cathedral, the Smolny Institute, the Russian museum, Saint Isaac's cathedral and the Mariinsky palace.

The most recognizable building in St. Petersburg is the Hermitage which besides hosting an enormous art collection is an art piece on its own, both from the inside an the outside. Inside the Hermitage, each room is well decorated and appears to cover a different theme. A room like the Jordan staircase is a piece of art, unique in the world. Religion has played a large role in St. Petersburg which has given rise to the church of the Saviour on spilled blood. Inside this church all the walls are decorated with mosaic.

Other religious places include the Alexander Nevsky monastery, the Smolny cathedral and the small but pretty Chesma church. All of these are typical Russian, but are built in a different style and maintain their own identity. The palace bridge leads to Vasilevsky island where you find the Egyptian sphinx and the naval museum. A short walk from there leads you to the Peter and Paul fortress in which there is a church with very tall spire. For more impressive sights of Russia visit the nearby palaces of Peterhof and Pushkin, just a few kilometers outside of St. Petersbug.

The city of St. Petersburg is large, so you'll probably need at least three days to see it all. The downside is that most attractions charge a significant entrance fee and you might want to make some choices up front what to see. In St. Petersburg you'll see much of the Russian history, but if you want to see a bit more you can go on a day trip to either the Peterhof palace or the Pushkin palace. both can be easily reached by minibus. St. Petersburg was named Leningrad for some years, but in 1991 its name changed back to St. Petersburg.
