Sightseeing in Veliky Novgorod

The city of Veliky Novogord with its many churches is one of the oldest in Russia  The city is very quit, but has a nice atmosphere surrounds it, probably best described as provincial Russian. For those who travel around Russia it makes a distraction from the well known cities and allows you to experience something different. The city center can be best described as an open air museum where people actually live and work.

The old churches, especially around Yaroslav's Court are a good example of how Russia must have looked many years ago. Yaroslav's court is named after Yaroslav the Wise and includes the trade mart, the church of St. Nicholas and the church of St. Prodopius. There are dozens of small churches scattered around Veliky Novgorod such as the church of the twelve apostles and the cathedral of St. Nicholas. The majority of them are not open to visitors, but they are still worth a look.

Most interesting is the Novgorod Kremlin which is is surrounded by a thick red brick wall with several watch towers. It has a  different feel than the Kremlin in Moscow as it is less formal and there are fewer visitors. Inside the Kremlin you will find the Millennium of Russia monument and the Saint Sophia cathedral. In Novgorod as in many Russian cities, you will also find a statue of Lenin.

One feature of Veliky Novgorod are the traditional wooden houses. They are not marked on a map, but when walking around town you are likely to come across a few. These have been well decorated with wood carvings and painted in a bright colors which makes them very typical.

There are two places just outside of Veliky Novgorod which are easy to visit and worth seeing. These are the Yurev monastery and the museum of wooden architecture. Both are in walking distance of each other and can be visited in one trip. There is a local bus which can take you there and drives in a big loop in one direction only. It stops at the Yurev monastery first and the museum of wooden architecture is located just further down the road. The museum of wooden architecture gives a good impression of how people used to live in Russia many years ago.

Veliky Novgorod lies only a couple of hours south of St. Petersburg. It can be reached by train both from St. Petersburg and Moscow, although it is closer to the first one. From the train station it takes around 15 minutes to walk to the city center. To get around town buses are besides walking, the only option. The best time to visit is from spring up to early fall as winters can be cold and everything is covered in snow.
