Sightseeing in Bucharest

In the southern part of Romania lies the capital city Bucharest (in Romanian: Bucaresti). It is a city with around 2 million inhabitants and one of the largest in the whole region. Bucharest has an old city center which is remarkably nice, although some of it is not in an optimal state. It is sometimes referred to as the Paris of the east.

The main sight of Bucharest is the Parliament palace or People's palace which dominates the view of the city. The palace is one of the largest buildings in the world which can only be appreciated when walking around it in a big loop. The outside appears as an imposing building but the inside makes an even bigger impression. To see the extravagance of the interior decorations and the materials that have been used, there are guided tours available which takes you to the main rooms. The road leading to the People's palace is called Unirii boulevard and it is worth walking along to get a taste of some of the history of Bucharest. The apartment blocks have all been built in the same style and the combination this with the fountains on the avenue gives the impression that it was all built to impress.

Some of the other historical buildings in the old town center which are a must see include the Opera house, the architecturally stunning CEC palace and the palace of justice which creates a beautiful waterfront. Somewhat further away from the center is the Triumphal arch located which has a similar feel to it as the one in Paris. An important place in more recent history is Revolution square where the democracy as we know it today has started. This square is also home to the Romanian Athanaeum concert hall and the central university library.

There are a couple of museums around such as the museum of the Romanian Peasant which focuses on traditions and the village museum which shows many of the old wooden buildings and represent traditional living in Romania. As with many big cities there are several churches dotted around the city with the St. Nicholas church, the Kretzulescu church, Italian church and Stavropoleos church all being interesting examples.

The best way of getting to Bucharest is by plane and it is connected by several budget airlines. There are trains available to some of the other large cities such as Sofia, but these can be time consuming. Getting around Bucharest is straightforward with the metro that takes you to the majority of the interesting places. Alternatively, there are many buses available. The best time to visit is from April up to September because like many places in eastern Europe, the winter can be chilly and regularly receive snow. Although it should be mentioned that the pictures below were taken in November which still can have some nice days but the weather is likely to be changeable.
