Sintra travel pictures

Things to see in Sintra

Sintra is a small town with several impressive historical sights and is considered to be the best day trip from Lisbon. There are two sights that are the main reason for visiting this town which are the castle dos Muros and palace da Pena.

The castle dos Muros is an old fortress which is a strong reminder of medieval times. It has a typical layout with big defense walls and tall watch towers. It is possible to walk over the old outer walls which provides an amazing view over the surrounding scenery. Apart from the walls there isn't much to see as there are no other buildings left standing, but this is enough to soak up the old atmosphere. There are a few ruins scattered around the place. It is the combination of a medieval castle and the views of the surroundings which make this place worth visiting.

The other sight, palace da Pena is an architectural marble. Its location on top of a hill makes it stand out, but also the different bright colors that have been used. This is a palace at its best with everything being lavishly decorated and it feels more like a fairy tale than anything else. There is a fixed route that needs to be followed which takes you through all the rooms. These have all been well preserved and shows clearly the wealth of the people who used to live here. This is definitely one of the most unique places in Portugal.

Don't forget to visit the old town as well. Because it is built on hills it offers many nice viewing points and although being small, it has a picturesque appearance with several nice places. The main attraction in the old town is the national palace which is an imposing white building. There are several restaurants and bars where one can relax after a day of sightseeing.

The best way of visiting Sintra is by taking a local train from Lisbon which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour to get there. Once at the train station it takes around 15-20 minutes to walk to the old town which offers some nice views along the way. The best thing is to take the sightseeing bus which takes you to the most interesting places and then drops you off in the town center at the end of it. The bus follows one big loop and runs in one direction only. Walking is not recommended as the hills are very steep.
