Things to see in Mafra

Mafra is a small Portuguese town close to Lisbon. The main attraction is the national palace which is located in the city center and is the most remarkable building in the whole area. The size of the whole building is enormous which is in stark contrast to the rest of the town. When visiting inside, the palace and the church are both accessible  The church is well decorated and similar to others found in Portugal although it is one of the larger ones. The main object to see is the impressive palace. Many of the rooms have kept its original character and have been well preserved. These include some of the bedrooms and dining rooms. Some of the more remarkable ones are the old library and the room with the dear antlers. Unfortunately, it is not allowed to walk freely around the library, but given the history which is kept in here and preserved for the future it is easy to see why. It is still the most impressive part of the palace so be sure not to miss it. The room with the dear antlers feels a bit awkward, but is a nice addition to the whole place.

Beside the palace there is little to do in Mafra, so if you want to visit it, it is best done as a day trip from Lisbon as an overnight stay does not add much to the experience. Mafra can be easily reached by bus which takes roughly one hour on a route provides some attractive views outside the window. The bust stop is right in front of the palace.
