Things to see in Evora
|
Evora is a small Portuguese town with an attractive center and is embedded in an incredible relaxing atmosphere. It is surrounded by an old defense wall with big towers which creates an idyllic setting of this town and will be the first noticeable structure you will see upon arrival. When walking into the town, quickly you'll enter Giraldo square on which the beautiful Santo Antao church is located. The square is surrounded by several old buildings which create a nice look.
A bit further onto one of the roads the lead to the square is the town hall located with its flags waving in the wind. The whole town looks and feels like it hasn't changed in many years. There is an old Roman temple located of which only a the pillars are left standing. Its history is further shown by the aqueduct which is still intact and is one of the most prominent structures around. There are several other sights worth seeing in the old town center such as the Loios church, the university, Carmo church, Igreja da Graca and the gallery in the public park.
What makes Evora even more attractive are the small cobbled stone streets. There is hardly any traffic and the number of visitors are often limited which creates a more authentic atmosphere. Evora can be reached by either bus or train from Lisbon and is about 2 hours away. Despite being a fair bit away, it can be visited as a day trip, as the town is small and still can be seen in a day. For those who want to see a laid back town in Portugal, Evora is highly recommended. |
