Things to see in Aveiro
|
Aveiro is a small city nickname 'the Venice of Portugal' and is located in the center of the country. It has a small, but beautiful old town which is also the main attraction for visiting this place. The prettiest part to visit is located around the Fish market where old houses and narrow streets provide a nice atmosphere. Several bars and restaurants make it all a bit more lively.
Another attraction is the train station which has been decorated with blue tiles and has an unique look to it. Walk back along the main road to get a more city feel of Aveiro. There are many small churches dotted around town, such as Sao Goncaolo church, Senhor das Barrocas and Igreja das Carmelitas which all managed to have a different look and many of them can be visited. The main square is located in front of the town hall and this area is nice to explore.
To do justice to its nickname 'Venice', there are several canals and even boat rides are offered to take you around Aveiro. Some of the other sights include Praca do 14 de Juno, cathedral Sao Domingos, Rua Combatantes and the Mesericordia church. Because Aveiro is a small town, one day should be enough to see almost everything of what is on offer. It is well connected by train from Porto and Lisbon, so it is an easy place to stop over. It might be too far away to visit it as a day trip, but would not be impossible. |
