The Hague travel pictures

Sightseeing in The Hague

The Hague, although it is not the capital, is the seat of the government of The Netherlands and is located in the west of Holland. Despite it having the size of a city, it is often referred to as the largest village of Holland because it was never granted city rights.

The Hague has an attractive look with some of its sights including the government buildings, Plein square and the New church. The Seat of the government includes the knights hall, the Binnenhof and the Maurits house which is a museum with many paintings from the dutch 'golden age'. The Hague has many nice areas with all the houses built in distinctive old Dutch style. What makes The Hague attractive is that several modern buildings have been built with a very distinctive look in which they have tried to combine modern architecture with features from the seventeenth century. This look has worked quite well and does the city no harm.

The Hague is home to the international court of justice which is located in the Peace Palace and has been the home of several conventions. The Peace Palace is an impressive building and its gardens put it in a nice setting. Getting to The Hague is easy by train and it is well connected to all other cities. For example, getting there from Amsterdam only takes one hour, so it would work well as a day trip.
