Sightseeing in Rotterdam

South of Amsterdam lies the city of Rotterdam which is famous for having the largest harbor in Europe. Rotterdam is different to all other cities in Holland as it was largely rebuilt after the second world war. This has resulted in a modern looking city with many high rise buildings and several buildings which have experimented with new architectural styles.

The most recognizable building in the city is the gate of Delft building which is a modern glass tower and with its height of 151 meters it is one of the highest skyscrapers of Holland. If you arrive in Rotterdam at the central train station this will be the first noticeable building.

Unfortunately, it can be said that Rotterdam does not have the same charm as other Dutch cities, but there are still many things worth seeing. On of Rotterdam's older sights include the old harbor where the white house is located and several nice beer terraces can be found. One historical building which is still left is that of the Holland-America line from where Dutch migrants would depart to the USA. It is now surrounded by newly built skyscrapers.

Examples of modern architecture include the cubic houses and the iconic Erasmus bridge over the river Maas which is the most recognizable landmark of the city. If you are into creative building design than you will be spoiled as Rotterdam has been a playground for modern architecture for years. Another place to visit is the Euromast which is 185 meters high and is the tallest tower that is open to the public in the Netherlands and provides expansive views of its surroundings.

For those who want to escape Rotterdam on a day trip there is plenty of choice. As most cities are not far from each other there are several options for those who want to see a more of the Dutch history. Nearby is The Hague which is the seat of the government and Delft which has a very pretty old town center. A bit further away, but still in easy reach are the student towns Leiden and Utrecht.

Rotterdam has its own airport, but most people will still fly in to Amsterdam airport which is well connected by train. The city center of Rotterdam is relatively compact so walking will get you to most places. There is a metro and buses are also available for longer distances. The best time to visit this city is from spring until fall as winters can be cold and see its fair share of rain.
