Sightseeing in Nijmegen

The oldest city of the Netherlands is Nijmegen, although it battles for that title with Maastricht. It was founded by the Romans because of its strategic location near the river Waal. Nijmegen is not the most visited tourist destination, but once a year visitors from over the whole world come to Nijmegen to walk the four day march. Besides the march there is a festival going on for seven days in a row which is free to enter.

The city has a small but interesting old center  Its most attractive sight is the great market which is surrounded by several old buildings which serve as pubs and have beer gardens. From the square you also get a view on the St. Stevens church which looks out over the whole city of Nijmegen. Other sights include the Titus Brandsma church, the Petrus Canisius church, the Belvedere, the city hall and the Waal bridge. For a bit of city history visit the Valkhof park which contains an old chapel and a ruin. Another green space is the Kronenburger park where many student from the Nijmegen university hang out on a sunny day and has a medieval brick defense tower. If you get thirsty, head to the bars on the Molenstreet or the King's square.

Nijmegen is about 1.5 hour away from Amsterdam so it is still possible to visit it as a day trip. Given its small size you won't have to spent more than one day here to see the whole city.
