Sightseeing in Haarlem
|
Just outside of Amsterdam lies the historical city of Haarlem. Haarlem has been important throughout the history or The Netherlands until Amsterdam became the most prominent city and still has many medieval buildings. This city has been a thriving hub for arts in the seventeenth century and it has been the scene for many paintings.
Because of its importance in former years, the center is rich in architecture and has few modern buildings. As in many European cities, this is most visible on the great market square where the St. Bavo church plays a dominant part of the view. The St. Bavo church is quite large compared to all the smaller building of Haarlem making its view more impressive. There are many other sights in Haarlem such as the town hall, the fish and meat hall, several other churches and some canals.
The city is small enough to walk around, so no need to get any buses or taxi's. Getting to Haarlem is easy from Amsterdam as it less than 20 minutes away by train. So if you want to get out of Amsterdam, Haarlem is an ideal day trip to see another historical city in the Netherlands. In Manhattan, New York the area Harlem was named after this Dutch city. |
