Sightseeing in Gouda

Gouda is a small city (78.000 inhabitants) located in the west of The Netherlands, not far from The Hague and Rotterdam. The old town center is small, but has some really nice buildings with the most famous and recognizable the Gothic styled town hall and the St. Johns church. The city hall has some distinctive architecture and having the town hall located in the middle of the market square gives it a very different look and makes it stand out more.

Other sights of Gouda include the Catherina guest house and the Gouwe church. Because of its small size, the city is easy to walk around and that is also why Gouda makes an ideal day trip from Amsterdam which is less than one hour away or any of the other cities in Holland. You will need no more than one day to see the whole of Gouda.

Famous for this city is the Gouda cheese which is one of Holland's most famous cheese and used in many recipes. The cheese is shaped like a wheel and comes in different sizes, weighing from 1 to 15 kg. During the summer months the cheese market is still being held in its traditional way. There are plenty of places where you can buy and taste the cheese. Another famous item from Gouda is its pottery which is quite colorful when comparing it the pottery from the nearby city of Delft.
