Sightseeing in Den Bosch

Down south in Holland in the province of Brabant lies the city of Den Bosch. Its official name is 's-Hertogenbosch, but most people refer to this city as Den Bosch. Despite being a small city, the old town center is attractive and nice to walk around.

The historical market square and the nearby located city hall are good examples of its old historical architecture. The main attraction in Den Bosch is the St. Johns cathedral which is the largest in Holland and is nicely decorated. It has been built as the prime example of the Brabantine Gothic architecture. It is possible to go inside, but unfortunately you can not climb its tower. Some of the other sights of Den Bosch include the old defense walls, the binnendieze (canals), the statue of the Golden Dragon, the St. Jacobus church and the North-Brabantine museum.

If you are into modern architecture go to the other side of the central train station to the Palace quarters. It's apartment blocks have been designed to look like a sailing ship and does indeed look so from the right angle. Several businesses are located in this area. The famous desert of Den Bosch is the Bossche bol which is a pastry ball filled with whipped cream and covered in chocolate. It is a nice treat but can be challenging to eat without getting dirty.

Den Bosch can be easily visited as a day trip as it is only one hour away by train from Amsterdam. Each year there is a festival called the Carnival which is celebrated in Den Bosch and it has a large parade.
