A day trip to Breda

In the south of Holland lies the city Breda. This city has a remarkable nice old town. The key attractions are the castle of Breda and the Great church. The castle consists of several buildings and is surrounded by a moat. Its medieval character is clearly visible. A bit further into town you can visit the Great church. This enormous church still dominates the skyline as it did in former days and is a true highlight of this city. Its architecture is typical for the south of Holland. On the nearby Great market square you can relax with a drink and enjoy the historical view which has become the postcard picture of Breda.

There are several other important historical buildings such as the court of Justice, the Saint Joost chapel, the Queen Wilhelmina pavilion and the Beyerd museum. One small but amazing place in Breda is the Beguinage. This has a small garden and is surrounded by a church and several houses. It has a very peaceful atmosphere and feels like its from a different world. Probably that's how it was intended to be in the first place.

For a bit of modern architecture it might be worthwhile to visit the grounds of the university where several modern buildings in different styles are located and make up an attractive campus. The presence of the university makes Breda a much more lively city and there are bars and beer terraces scattered around the city and especially on a sunny day it is a very enjoyable place to visit. Getting to Breda is easy as it is connected by rail to almost any other city in The Netherlands. Given the size of Holland it can be visited as a day trip from from the nearby cities of Tilburg and Den Bosch, but it is also possible to do it from Amsterdam. The city can be easily seen in one day.
