Sightseeing in Rabat
|
Despite being only the third largest city of Morocco, Rabat is the capital city. The city is a mixture of the old Medina and a new very modern town which could not be more different to each other. The most prominent presence of its modern looks is the tree lined Mohammed V boulevard with on both sides modern buildings. However, when entering the old souks, its like stepping into a different era with old buildings, mosques and many street vendors and small alleys. It is this stark contrast which makes Rabat an attractive city to visit. Just outside of the city, but within walking distance, are the ruins of the castle of Chellah. When arriving at the castle the outer walls still look intact and expectations might be high, but inside there is nothing more left than a few ruins. Although there are some buildings reasonably intact, including a minaret from an ancient mosque still standing and it is still worth a visit to see some of Rabat's past.
For a bit of fresh air it is worth heading over to the sea front and look at the Atlantic Ocean or go to the beach. One sight overlooking the ocean is the Oudaias kasbah (or Kasbah of the Udayas). Probably best described as a walled village and because it is painted in traditional blue and white colors, it is one of the most picturesque places in Morocco. Some the of the other main sights includes the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the Hassan Tower which are built in Moorish architectural style. As with many other cities in Morocco, Rabat also has some old city walls with some nicely decorated gates. Rabat can be reached by trains from Marrakesh which takes just over 4 hours. |
