Exploring Ait Benhaddou

The Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou is a citadel built by the Berbers from the 14th century onward and is an amazing example of mud architecture in Morocco. Because of its uniqueness and being full of character, many famous movies such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, Gladiator and Alexander were filmed here. When stepping into the Kasbah you get the feeling of being in a unique place and being transported back into ancient times. It is not just the Kasbah itself, but also the desert surroundings which make this place special. The Kasbah is not enormous so it is easy to walk everywhere. You can actually go all the way up the hill on which Ait Benhaddou is built. When you reach the top you will see a shed and you can can enjoy the amazing view which allows you to see for miles. When you walk around the citadel you feel this distinct feeling of getting lost, which is basically impossible as there are only a couple of streets. Ait Benhaddou does not only look good on the outside, but also on the inside and it definitely one of the sights that makes Morocco unique in the world.

Getting to Ait Benhaddou is a bit more difficult if you want to do it on your own, but you can easily (as most people do) book a tour from Marrakesh to go there. This is the multi-day tour that also takes you to the Sahara desert. Although it is possible to rent a car and do it as part of a day trip, it's probably more worth doing it on a two or three day trip to the Sahara and several other places.
