Tulum travel pictures

Introduction to Tulum

Tulum is an ancient Maya site that existed up to the 17th century. This is roughly 70 years after the Spanish had arrived in Mexico. It used to be an important hub for trade and had an estimated population of 1500 people living there. This does mean it is considerably smaller than places such as Chichen Itza and Palenque, but it still manages to set itself apart from the others.

Today there are only ruins left standing. Still, it is a site of amazing beauty as it is located near the Caribbean sea and has a beautiful beach nearby. There is green vegetation growing around the site and all this together makes is a perfect place to take some beautiful pictures.

Most of the buildings are in ruins and examples of these are the Great palace and the god of winds temple. It is easy to imagine what they must have looked like when they were still intact. Some of the structures such as the temple of the frescoes have survived over time and have been carefully restored. What makes the site further attractive is the amount of green space between everything which creates an archaeological park.

The other attraction of Tulum is the beach. There is small one near the ruins, but this one can get a bit crowded due to the amount of people who visit the Maya settlement. A bit further down the road is a large beach which is a great place to relax. The beach is perfectly white and the water is crystal clear and basically it is what you can expect from a Caribbean setting. There are several bars located on the beach.

Getting to the ruins of Uxmal takes a bit of effort as the town where all the hotels are located is a few kilometers up the road. At several places it is possible to rent a bicycle and it is an easy ride up to the ruins. The town itself can be reached by bus. The site can be visited all year round, but hurricane season might not be the best time to visit.
