Enjoying the sun on the beach of Playa del Carmen
|
Playa del Carmen is a small town on the coast of the Caribbean sea in Yucatan. It is a popular place in Mexico to visit. The main attraction of Playa del Carmen is its beach which is also the main reason for visiting this place.
The town itself is a collection of shops, restaurants, bars and hotels. It basically has no interesting sights to see, but it does have plenty of places to relax. The beach is one of the best in Mexico as the sand is white and the water is crystal clear. The beach is not overcrowded meaning that there is enough space to roll out your towel and go for a swim. The water also allows for some sports or activities such as paragliding.
The main difference with nearby Cancun is that is doesn't have the wild nightlife some may be looking for. Still, it does have several nice bars and restaurants and there is enough to keep you entertained in the evening.
For day trips there are several possibilities. The most popular one is to catch a ferry to Cozumel to visit the island or go on a diving or snorkeling trip. It is possible to book these snorkeling tours on arrival as many tour operators offer a trip both in the morning and in the afternoon. An alternative option is to visit the ancient Maya temples of Uxmal, Tulum or Chichen Itza.
As it is part of the Caribbean, temperatures are very comfortable and will be so during most of the year. The only months to avoid are those from June until September as it can be very humid and this is also the time that hurricane season occurs. For those looking for a winter break, Playa del Carmen is a perfect option.
