Tourist attractions in ancient Rome

Rome is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and there is a good reasons for it. This city in Italy is very old has a well preserved ancient part with many famous landmarks. Furthermore, the Italian culture is well expressed here and many good restaurants and luxury shops can be found all around the city.

When it comes to major sights, there is no shortage of them. The most famous of these are the massive Colosseum or the Roman Forum which dates back to the former Roman empire. These sights are famous throughout the world and most people want to see them at least once in their lifetime. Because of their size they are easy to navigate without walking in a continuous crowd of people and have retained some of their historical importance without being turned into a walk through museum. Another sight is the monument to Victor Emanuel II which is has an impressive appearance but serves no real function.

Rome is also famous for its fountains as they have been decorated with statues and many of them are a true piece of art. The best known one of these is the Trevi fountain, but due to its popularity it is completely surrounded by other tourist. Just work yourself through the crowds to get a view from close by and admire the many statues that decorate this attraction. Another one that is a must see is the Neptune fountain which is located in the center of the beautiful piazza Navona.

One thing that this city is not short of are churches. There is literally one in every street and it it is worth making a choice which ones to see and which ones not to avoid becoming tired of them. All are nicely decorated on both the inside and the outside and are a living memory why this city has become the center of Christianity. A nice example is the Basilica of St. John the Lateran and Sant'Agnese in Agone

Although technically a different country, the Vatican with its Sistine chapel can also be visited as part of you trip to Rome. It includes the St. Peters Basilica which is the center of the catholic church but also the most impressive one that exists on our planet. It is definitely one of the largest and anyone will be impressed by the sheer size of it and the attention that has been given to its detailed decorations. Best is to visit it early or later in the day to avoid the massive crowds.

There are too many interesting sights to list them all, but there are a few that are noteworthy and deserve at least a quick view. These are the arch of Constantine, the castle of St. Angelo, the city hall, the palace of justice and the Spanish steps. Due to the number of things to see and the age of them there will always be a few that are under restoration.

When it comes to food, the choices range from overpriced tourist restaurants to local pizzeria's which are all abundant. Besides Paris, Rome is probably the city you want to see in your lifetime. If you happen to be a football fan, the city is home to two big clubs A.S. Roma and S.S. Lazio and in many weekends there is a big match going on.

Although there is more than enough to see in Rome itself, there are a few day trips which are worth considering and make a nice distraction from the city. One of those is Assisi which is a medieval town with the main attraction the Basilica of St. Francis. For an even older city consider a visit to the ancient Roman port of Ostia Antica and wonder around the ruins.

Rome is being served by two airports which are Ciampino and Fiamicio and because it is a major tourist destination it is well connected to most cities in Europe. Getting around the city is easy as it has a convenient metro system. Forget about driving as the city is completely congested with traffic. But because the city center is relatively compact and there is literally an interesting sight around every corner, walking around is the best way to see Rome. Most people spent a couple of days here so the easiest strategy would be to subdivide the center into parts and explore one each day. Because of its location Rome can be visited all year round. Probably the months to avoid are December to February because of the colder weather and August as it is blistering hot and many of the locals escape the city to relax at the beaches.
