Sightseeing in Cork

Located in the south of Ireland is the charming city Cork. It has a similar look and feel to Dublin, only on a smaller scale, although being the second largest city of the country but is more laid back and probably best described as typical Irish.

There is a considerabble variation of architectural styles as there are the Georgian houses but also Victorian styled buildings. The main sight is the Saint Fin Barre's cathedral which due to the absence of high rise buildings can be seen from all around Cork. Unfortunately the tower cannot be climbed. Other churches include the Shandon steeple, St. Ann's church and the Holy Trinity church, but there are a dozen more scattered around town.

There are many other sights to be visited in Cork including the old city Goal and the city hall. When you walk around it is hard not to come across most of the interesting place and places like the Opera house and the Cork courthouse will come along your way. Other attractive features of the city are the bridges that cross the river Lee and all of them have been built with a different look.

The main shopping street in St. Patrick's street and it is centrally located. For a different shopping experience head over to the English Market and for a proper pint there are many Irish pubs dotted around town which all serve a proper meal.

Another remarkable place is the University of Cork which has been built as a college similar to other Irish universities but in its own distinct way and gives some impressions of the history of this city. It is possible to see the whole city in one day, but if you take it easy and spent sometime in the Irish pubs it is not difficult to find entertainment for a relaxing weekend here.

There are a few options for a day trip from Cork. The town Cobh which is a pretty seaside town is worth a visit. The best thing to do for a day out is to either drive or join a tour that takes you to the scenery. Depending on which direction the bus takes off this can include places like the cliffs of Moher or the ring of Kerry.

Cork can be visited all year round. It doesn't have a particular good summer and the winter can be mild as well, although it does see a fair bit of rain. It is connected by rail to the rest of the country but it is worth considering flying in or taking the bus as this can be cheaper or quicker.  The city center is very compact so it can be easily explored on foot and there is no real need to take any transportation but there are also many buses to take you around town.
