The moon landscape of Mount Bromo

The landscape of Bromo Tenger Semeru national park is nothing like anything else on this planet and one of the highlights of a visit to Indonesia. The caldera is a lowered platform compared to its surroundings with in the middle the volcano's Bromo and Batok. Usually all of this is visited with a Jeep which starts early in the morning. The jeep drives you to the viewing point where you can watch the sunrise on one side and on the other side, the rays of the sun start reflecting of the volcano's. From here you get a clear view of Bromo on the left, Batok in the middle and in the back Semeru. It can be quite crowded up here with many tourists.

After the sunrise (and a coffee) the jeep takes you to Mt. Bromo itself. It stops at the base close to the Hindu temple. From there you can walk up or ride on the back of a horse. It is a relative easy climb which does not take that long, although it is through volcanic sand. The last steep part is quite easy as there are concrete stairs built against the crater wall. Given the amount of tourists there is usually a slow queue. When you get to the top there is an amazing view of the crater which is like a classic from a comic book. Depending on the activity there can be some steam coming out of the crater. After this you return back to your accommodation.

You can ask the driver to take you to the Savannah afterwards but this is not part of the standard tour. It is also possible to view Bromo without a tour. If you walk, the volcano is only an hour or so away from the town of Semoro Lawang where all the guest houses are located. The viewing point is a bit too far to reach by foot and not recommended to walk up to see the sunrise as there is a fair bit of traffic.

Getting to Bromo is time consuming as it is not that well connected to the rest of Indonesia. It is possible to book tours from Yogyakarta which after a visit to Bromo then take you to Bali. Alternatively you can fly to Surabaya and then travel 4 hours by bus to get to Cemoro Lawang (change in Probolingo).
