Relax on the beaches of Kuta
|
The tourist hot spot in Bali and probably Indonesia is the beach town Kuta. The main reason for coming here is the beach, the sea and the nightlife. It has been a backpacker mecca for many years, but resorts are now also common. The beach is attractive, although it doesn't has the same appeal as some of the beaches in Malaysia or Thailand. But, those are probably some of the best in the world which raises the bar significantly to be the top spot. Still, the sand is clean and there is more than enough space for everyone so you won't have to squeeze in your towel, but just pick the spot you like most.
Behind the beach there is a row of palm trees which provide some shades, but unfortunately they are also inhabited by vendors who sell you all the things you need to make a day on the beach enjoyable (think fruits, drinks etc). Luckily there are many beach chairs and parasols if you want to escape the sun for a bit. What makes Kuta really great are the waves that keep coming in continuously. It might be less comfortable if you are a swimmer, but if you happen to be a surfer, it is truly paradise. Just peddle to into the sea and within a minute of two you will find that wave that will take you back to the shore. For those that are not a surfer, but would like to give it a try, there are several surf schools in Kuta which can provide you with a course or a few lessons. This is a great way of getting introduced to the surf sport.
The town of Kuta itself is nothing special as it consists mainly of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. There are a few temples and monuments around but they don't stand out to some of the more famous ones in Indonesia such as Borobudur. Nightlife is pretty good here and many people will confirm this. Many places offer a happy hour if you enter before a certain time.
A stay in Kuta also offers a good opportunity to see more of Bali itself. There are many tour operators which can arrange a day trip to see the scenery, temples or Ubud. It is worth shopping around to compare their offers. This is a side of Bali that should not be missed as it is quite amazing and also what makes this island one of the most attractive in the world. Especially the green rice terraces are an amazing thing to see and one of the highlights of this part of the world.
Most people will fly into Bali through Denpasar airport which is only a short taxi ride away from Kuta. There are buses that take you through the rest of Indonesia, but they leave from Denpasar. Getting around Kuta is straightforward as most places are within walking distance. Everything is clustered around the beach and motor taxi's are widely available. Bali can be visited throughout the whole year. The wet season last from October to April, but is still comfortable enough and there still will be plenty of sunshine. |
