Exploring the temple of Borobudur

Outside of Yogyakarta lies the temple of Borobudur which is the largest Buddhist structure in the world and one of the main tourist attractions in Indonesia. Borobudur dates back to 825 AD but apparently was deserted in the 14th century. In the 19th century is was rediscovered and went through several restorations. The reason for keeping it hidden from the rest of the world was that is was covered under a thick layer of volcanic ash and the jungle had grown over it. The monument is now an UNESCO world heritage sight. The temple of Borobudur has been engraved on a silver coin to honor the wonders of the world.

The temple of Borobudur has been fully restored and is located in a attractive park surrounded by some amazing scenery. The monument consists of several layers which are connected by stairs and you can walk around all of them. Basically the structure consists of a base platform which works as the foundation and then six square terraces. This is then followed by three circular terraces and on the peak a large central Stupa. The best way to see Borobudur is to keep circling around and slowly work your way to the top. If you walk around it on every level, you will have to cover a fair distance. There are many carved reliefs all over the temple and when you walk around you can see many of them. These carvings often tell a story and some of the guides should be able to explain some of them. These include the 'law of Karma' and the birth of Buddha'. On top of the temple there are several stupa's which have a statue of Buddha inside. Some of these were completely destroyed in the past and have been recreated in the shape of their original images. The views from the top are amazing as it is one of the highest points and you can see the green surroundings for miles. The ground is very fertile and now has a proper forest growing onto it.

Near the main site there are two museums. The first one is the Samudraraksa which host a full size replica of the Borobudur ship and the second museum Karmawibhanga contains several archaeological findings and also explains the process of restoring them. They are included in the price of the ticket and make a nice addition to a visit.

Borobudur can be easily reached from Yogyakarta and all travel agencies offer this as a organized tour. Often the day trip is combined with a visit to the nearby temple of Prambanan. It is possible to do it yourself and rent a motor taxi, but the organized tour is definitely the most convenient.  The driver usually just waits at the parking lot and gives you an amount of time to walk around the site. On site the only way of getting around is by foot, although there can be a small train that drives people around. The dry season runs from May to September, but Indonesia is a country which can be visited throughout the whole year as is doesn't get the extreme difference in rainfall between different times of the year.
