Exploring the temples on Bali
|
As religion has always played a large part in the culture of Bali, there is no shortage of temples on this island. What is nice is most of these temples is that they are quite different to each other. The largest temple is the Mother Temple of Besakih which has been built on the slopes of Mount Agung. Some of the other temples which are worth a visit on Bali are Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave temple), Bangli (Kehen temple), Gunung Kawi (the rocky temple), Tampak Siring (holy spring temple), Tanah Lot (Tanah Lot temple).
Although not a temple, the Klungkung (the old court justice of the Klungkung kingdom) is worth a visit as well. Some of the temples are located within a jungle environment which makes the experience different while others are in a very open place. Sometimes the path leading into the temple is unpaved so make sure you wear proper shoes.
It is possible to rent a scooter and visit the temples on Bali by yourself, or just join a day tour which runs from most places which are tourist hot spots like Kuta or Ubud. Most of these tours only include a few of the temples, so make sure the ones you really would like to visited are included. Most temples do charge an entrance fee and several have a dress code and will ask you to wear a sarong as a respect to their culture. Often these day trips also include some scenery and a dinner where you get an amazing view over the rice fields. |
