Things to see in Jaipur
|
Jaipur is the largest city in Rajasthan. Its main attraction is the royal palace, which is a large complex of buildings, courtyards and squares. There are several gates leading into the city palace of Jaipur with the Pink gate being the most notable. Inside the city palace, two of the most attractive buildings are the Chandra Mahal and the Maharajah palace. The complex is not as large as some of the other palace complexes found in India, but still well worth a visit.
Another remarkable building is the Albert hall museum which is built in a distinct style. Inside there are many artifacts from Indian history, but if you are not into museums, the building itself is impressive enough to make it worth a visit. In front of the Albert hall museum stands the Nehur statue. In Jaipur you will also find the Hawa Mahal which translates as the palace of winds. Due to its detailed stone carvings and the use of red and white colors it is a must see for those interested in Indian architecture.
Jaipur has an old defense wall which is still largely intact and there are many large and impressive gates. Just outside of Jaipur is the Amber fort located which is a fortress just like every big city in Rajasthan. You can take a rickshaw over there, but for the last bit you will need to walk up to the entrance. It is possible to get a ride on the back of an elephant. Inside the palace there are courtyards and a nice Indian garden. The fortress did have a military purpose so it is surrounded by a thick stone wall and has many structures which are not being used and have an unknown purpose. One sight in the Amber fortress is the Ganesh Pol. On the way to the fortress you will pass the Jal Mahal which is a palace in the middle of a lake.
Jaipur is referred to as the pink city because many of its buildings have been painted in this color. Unfortunately Jaipur is a very busy city with traffic being very noisy, making it less attractive than other cities in Rajasthan such as Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Udaipur. |
