Sightseeing in Athens

In the Mediterranean lies the city of Athens which played an important role throughout history as it was one of the first civilizations in Europe. The city is small with only 650.000 people living here, but its city center is surrounded by history and there are so many things to see that its size is well compensated.

Because of its age and the role of Greece in the earliest of civilizations, you can find building here which do not exist anywhere else. The most prominent example of this is the Acropolis with the Parthenon which is has become the face of the city and one of the most visited ruin in the world. Another important structure is the temple of the Olympian Zeus and although little of it remains today it is not hard to see how impressive it must have looked in former days.

There are more ancient sights worth seeing which include the Temple of Hephaestus, the library of Hadrian and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. When visiting these it is impossible to no realize how important this city must have been in earlier days. Greek culture has developed itself throughout the years and there are also examples from later periods such as the National Archaeological museum, the perfectly designed Zappeion and the now world famous Hellenic Parliament on Syntagma square.

Another attractive part to visit is the area around the university which is home to buildings such as the Athens academy of science and the national library. Its historical legacy still lives on today as in 1896 the first modern Olympics were organized in the Panathenaic stadium which can still be visited today. In 2004 the summer Olympics returned to Athens, but modern facilities were built.

Athens is a great place to walk around and spot several smaller but historically quite significant sights which are unique for Europe such as the Kapnikaea church. Many of these can be found on small squares or near little park which have been designed to keep the original buildings.

The day trips that can be undertaken from Athens are largely based around its history. These include the town Mycenae which also has an acropolis, the town Olympia which was the original site of the Olympic games and Epidaurus which has an enormous and well preserved ancient Greek theater. There is also the town Nafplio with has a little castle in the sea that looks unique. Alternatively hop on a ferry and explore one of the Mediterranean islands, although that would be hard to do in just one day.

Being so close to the Mediterranean sea, it does mean it never gets really cold, perhaps except for a few months is the middle of the winter, but in the middle of the summer it can get very hot. Athens is small enough to walk everywhere and there are so many things to see that taking transportation you would miss many things, so walking is a good way of seeing everything at low pace.
