Things to see in Berlin

In the East of Germany lies its capitol Berlin. Due to historical events, the city used to be divided into two parts: east and west Berlin separated by the Berlin Wall. The two parts of the city have developed very differently and it feels like two different cities that have merged together. Parts of this wall are still visible with the most prominent presence being the east wall gallery. This is a long concrete slab of 1.3 km which has been turned into an artwork as a reminder of the former dividing of the city. Close to the East wall gallery is the Oberbaum bridge located which looks like it has been designed based on a Disney movie.

The Eastern part of Berlin tends to have more historical sights than the Western part. The most recognizable landmarks of Berlin such as the Bundestag, the Brandenburger tor and the Berlin cathedral are located in this part of the city and are actually all three located close to each other. The cathedral is a true piece of art as it has been well designed and it is possible to climb to the top for a birds eye view over Berlin. The Brandenburger Tor is the symbol of the city and has been restored to its full glory. Around the corner lies the Bundestag which has been brought back to its former state but a large glass dome has been added to the top and it is now a much visited attraction of Berlin.

The place that every tourist goes to and many of the local youth hang out is Alexanderplatz. Several sights can be found here such as the Maria church, the Fernsehturm which is the highest point of the city and the Rotes Rathaus. Basically the walk from this square onto the street Unter den Linden passes the majority of the historical landmarks of Berlin.

There is also a museum Island which includes the Pergamon and the Bode museum. This part of the city has been under restoration for many years, but a good looking result has been achieved and it has become a vibrant part of the city.  There are also several universities with the most famous one being the Humboldt University which has some old buildings but also the Free University and the Technical University are well known.

In the west there are fewer sights but still a few places that are worth seeing such as the Nagedachtniskirche (Memorial church) which is a reminder to the war, the Soviet memorial and the Bellevue palace. A place that stands out is the Charlottenburg palace which has some beautiful landscaped gardens and is in stark contrast to the surrounding modern buildings.

There are limited options for day trips from Berlin as most suggested places that can be found on the internet are not that impressive. The one place that is a must visit is the historical town Potsdam. This is home to several palaces which are all located in a large park which has been properly landscaped. The nearby old town is worth a short visit as well. Potsdam can be reached by train.

The city center is large and walking around won't get you everywhere unless you are in good shape and have plenty of time. To make things more convenient, there is the metro U-bahn and S-bahn which is a easy way of getting around. The weather is sunny during summer, but wet and windy in winter, although it is possible to get a few nice days. Because of the size of the city it never feels crowded so there is no need to avoid high season. It is probably safe to assume there will be some snow in the winter months.
