Sightseeing in Aachen

Close to the point where Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium meet lies the city of Aachen. Because of its location it is a more international city where you will meet many people from the three neighboring countries which makes this city different to other German cities. Its location has also boosted its tourism. It is a relatively small city with around 260.000 people living here.

The main sight is the Aachen cathedral or in German Dom which was built in 786 AD. Back then its was an enormous construction. It is well worth a visit. There are several other churches such as St. Adalberts church in the old town center  Another sight is the city hall. Aachen is not particularly loaded with interesting sights, but has many smaller sights dotted around town.

Some of the other sights include the house of Mies van der Hohe, the university RWTH Aachen, the Couven pavilion, the Casino, the opera house and the typical Grunderzeit houses. Aachen also has a medieval presence which is visible today in the form of the Marschiertor and the Ponttor. These are both large medieval constructions. One part of the history of Aachen has its bathing which was known for its healing or purifying properties. There are still several spa's around, such as the Elisenbrunnen.

Aachen is very friendly and you can easily spent some time walking around town and because of its size that is all the transportation you need to get around. If you want to relax you can either go to the Kurgarten which is a well designed park or go for a refreshing drink at the market square.
