Sightseeing in Lyon

Lyon is a beautiful city in the middle of France which has a large historical center. Its main feature is the waterfront in which characterized by the typical architecture of its houses and the many bridges that cross the river Rhone. Beside the views along the river there are many more sights worth seeing of which there are too many to list them all.

Lyon can be subdivided into three areas: the cathedral part, the central part and the outer part. The cathedral part is home to the Notre Dame de Fourviere. It is a bit of a climb to get up there, but it is worth it as it offers a nice view over the city below. The cathedral is an impressive building and up worth visiting and admire the decorations inside. Nearby is the grand theater which are the remains of an ancient Roman settlement. There are also some other sights such as the churches of St. Just, St. Paul and St Jean. Especially the area around St. Jean church which is called Vieux Lyon is attractive as it has many small streets and old buildings with very typical French shops, bars and restaurants.

The central part is where the most of the sights are located. This is a stretched out area with on one end the town hall on Place des Terraux and on the other end Place Carnot. It is easy to spend a day seeing all the sights in between. Some of the most recognizable are the chamber of commerce, the Grand theater and Place des Jacobin. It is fair to say that Lyon has the same French grandeur as Paris, only it is less known. What makes this part of the city attractive is that each site is just a short walk away from another making it a pleasant walk to discover Lyon by foot.

The central part is connected by many bridges which cross the river Rhone and create different views of the city. The waterfront is simply amazing looking and especially when the sun comes out and reflect on the colors of the buildings. The outer part of Lyon has a limited number of sights, but still places such as the Faculte de Droit and the faculty of sciences are worth seeing. Part of waterfront has been turned into a nice promenade making it and enjoyable walk along the river Rhone and admire the city views.

There are a few possibilities for day trips out of Lyon. One of them is Grenoble which is another well known French city. The smaller town Vienne is only half an hour away and offers the same look and feel of a historical city. Nearby is also the wine region of Beaujolais with many vineyards and is a scenic area with several charming villages.

Lyon is well connected by the rest of France by train. Especially the TGV makes it easy to get to as it is connected by most of the other large cities such as Marseille and are only a few hours away. Within the city there is a good metro network, which makes it easy to get around. The best time to visit Lyon is from spring until fall. Only in the winter it can get very cold, but there could still be some mild days.
