Travel to Carcassonne

Carcassonne is a city in the south of France and mostly famous for its old castle. It is one of the largest castles in Europe and also one of the most recognizable in France. In addition to its impressive appearance, its location on top of a hill makes it stand out from its surroundings. There are several gates through which the castle can be entered. Although it looks impressive on the outside, the inside is not terribly exciting. The one highlight inside is the chateau which looks today as it did centuries ago. Enter the moat below to get some amazing pictures. To get a good look of the outside it is worth walking around the castle. There are actually two paths, one that goes around the outer walls and one that goes between the two defense walls.

Because there are no lampposts, you feel like a knight in shiny armor when you walk around and admire its tall towers. The pictures below give a real impression of what to expect. Before getting into the castle it is worth walking over Pont Neuf. This old bridge fits in with the setting of Carcassonne castle. To get the classical postcard view of both the bridge and the castle, walk over the other bridge nearby and take the stairs down to the waterfront on the side of the town. The town itself is a good representation of a charming French medium sized town and has many small streets, little churches and beautiful houses.

It is probably enough to spend one day here to see the castle and the town of Carcassonne itself. It is also possible to visit Carcassonne as a day trip from Toulouse as it is well connected by train.
