Things to see in Beijing

Beijing is the capital of China and a visit to this city is a true experience. it has an attractive city center with are many things to see such as the Forbidden city, the people's square and the Mao mausoleum. The size of this capital is enormous en it is easy to spent a few days here.

One of its key attractions is the Forbidden city which is centrally located and gives some insight into the life of former emperors of China. It is a huge complex consisting of several palaces and quarters. It truly is a city within a city. Unfortunately not everything has been preserved and some places feel somewhat empty. However, all the buildings are still there and it it obvious that a lot of work went into building these. The staircases are well designed and all the squares are surrounded by buildings made up of the same beautiful architectural style. They look different from each angle but always impressive. When entering through the main entrance you'll pass a large portrait of Mao. From there on you'll pass the first square and then make your way to the back. The best thing is to follow on side to the back and take the other side when going back to make the most out of it. Or just zig-zag trough everything. Because of its size and its many things to see,it is easy to spend half a day walking between these ancient city walls.

In front of the Forbidden City you can find the historically important Tiananmen square. Bordering the square are the Great hall of the people and China’s national museum. On Tiananmen square itself there is the Mausoleum of Mau which is open to visitors, although opening hours can be restricted, so worth checking ahead. Many people pay respect to this former leader and the whole experience has a ceremonial feeling to it. Other things to see on Tiananmen square are the monument to the people’s heroes and the ancient Zhenyang gate.

One of the most impressive religious sights of Beijing is the temple of heaven. It has a central altar which some beautiful carved dragons with nearby two other buildings. The whole place is has a nice looking layout and feels typically Chinese. Even nicer is its location in a big park where several other buildings can be found. Another large temple in Beijing which attracts many visitors is the Yong He Lama temple.

One of the most modern sights is the site of the 2008 Beijing Olympics which is worth visiting to see how this country has been developing itself and is looking to the future. The stadium that stands out the most is the Birds nest athletic stadium which has acquired world fame. The stadium itself can be visited. Another noticeable building is the aquatic center which has a distinctive look from the outside. The whole area is built in a nice way and is located right next to a metro stop.

Another place which is highly recommended to visit is the summer palace which is located just outside of Beijing. Its name as a palace is somewhat misleading as it basically is a large park with several historical buildings in it such as the temples on Longevity hill, the seventeen arch bridge and the marble boat. The park and gardens are done up well and properly maintained and a visit is well worth the effort. Including the time it takes to get there and then take a relaxing stroll throughout the park, expect this to take the full day which is well worth it. Close to the entrance there is a part called Suzhou street which represents a typical water town.

Beijing is the best starting point to visit the Great Wall and tours can be booked from all hotels. The tours do differ a lot and range from short visits to different points at the wall to long hikes along it. It is worth asking what is included. Alternative options to see some nature include Shidu scenic area, Longqing gorge and Mangshan national forest park. Getting to these and then getting around can take some effort, but ask at the local travel agents what can be arranged.

Most people will fly into Beijing as it is one of the main hubs of China and also a central tourist attraction. If you are already into the country the alternative is to take a local flight or a night train. These are quite comfortable and can save you a nights accommodation and allow you to travel without loosing time. Getting around Beijing is easy as the metro is very efficient and are a much faster way of getting around as traffic can be congested. Most of the street signs and metro stations are in English which brings an enormous comfort. Moving more towards the suburbs this can change a little bit making it much harder. When in doubt, most guidebooks have a translation to Chinese signs written next to the street name and every local will be able to point you in the right direction. Being located in the north of China, the weather is seasonal and the best time to travel is from spring until autumn.
