Things to see in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia

The city Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia. Despite Cambodia being associated with poverty and a turbulent history, Phnom Penh is a delightful surprise. The city is clean, has many interesting sights, is full of history and has a laid back atmosphere. Many people visit only Ankor Wat while in Cambodia but spending a few extra days in Phnom Penh is well worth it as it is an remarkable nice city.

The main tourist attraction is the impressive Royal Palace. This place is remarkably similar to the Royal Palace in Bangkok, although it is considerably less crowded. It consists of a large central temple, the silver pagoda and around it are several smaller structures. The large courtyard has been designed in such way that it looks different from each corner. Some of the other grounds are open depending if it is being used for official ceremonies.

Around the corner is the freedom monument located in the middle of a large square. Around the square there are several temples and other imposing buildings. The main temples in Phnom Penh are Wat Phnom, Wat Botum and Wat Ounalom. Some of these only consist of a large stupa, the many of them are more built as a convent with several buildings situated around a large courtyard. These are some of the most beautiful in Asia. Wherever you go there are small temples hidden between houses and several monasteries which can be entered freely.

The city center has several statues and fountains dotted around and compared to other major cities in Asia which it creates a different feel. It is also much less crowded and has avoided many of the concrete buildings but instead many colorful ones.

If you want to get out of the city, the most visited sight is known as the killing fields. You can visit these with a tour operator or alternatively negotiate a price with a taxi or tuk-tuk driver to take you there. There are other possibilities such as a sunset cruise or a trip to a weaving village.

Phnom Penh has its own airport and is served by some budget airlines, making it an easy way to get into the country. From the other main cities such as Siem Reap there are buses that have a direct connection. Getting around the city is mostly just walking or take a rickshaw. Phnom Penh is actually nice to walk around as traffic is relatively low and there are pedestrian zones almost everywhere and you don't get this feeling of walking in traffic. The best time to visit is during dry season which lasts from November to April. During the wet season a visit is still comfortable, but expect some heavy showers which occur mainly in the evening.
